Laura’s Story
Laura was 29 years old and 20 weeks pregnant when she was diagnosed with brain cancer and given 2 years to live. Referred to A Bit of a Break by Macmillan Cancer Support in Liverpool we found her and her family a holiday in the Lake District.
“We really enjoyed our week away in the Lake District, it was just what we all needed. The location of the cottage was amazing, you could see Lake Windermere from the terrace. We had the best time here making memories and can’t thank you all enough. It really was a break we all needed”.
What our guests say…
“The apartment was lovely and we had a lovely time! We visited lots of places in the area. It was just what I needed before the next round of chemo”.
“As a family we really enjoyed our time together, it was great to get away as we don’t do it much with everyone there. Thank you so much for giving us the time and space to be together to just relax and unwind. What you did provided us a little respite in busy and often hectic time as we adjusted to the difficult news we had received.”
“It was absolutely gorgeous. So happy to have time with the family. The house worked really well as I could walk round to access living and sleeping area on first floor or on good days use stairs. The weather was great and the house was only 5 minutes from the village so we could enjoy the lakeside cafes and shops.”
“I must pass on our deep and sincere thanks to you and everyone at A Bit of a Break. To say the last 10 months have been tumultuous would be something of a polite understatement.
The opportunity to be away from everything, in total peace, in a beautiful property in a stunning location has been a godsend. The fact that it was gifted, completely free of charge has been remarkable and a mere thank you doesn’t even get close to our gratitude.
The timing of a break could not have been better. To arrive at such a gorgeous property, with a welcoming gift of chocolates and wine waiting on the table felt like a virtual hug.
This holiday rescued us. We are both so very, very grateful.”
What our referral partners say…
Some of our families are really struggling and it can be hard to help lift their spirits.
I can’t tell you the joy it brings when we suggest A Bit of Break! They can’t believe that anyone would be so generous as to gift a holiday! The benefits to them of spending some time away are enormous.”
I have had so many people access your wonderful service and have had great feedback.
One patient went to Ambleside with his partner and stayed in a cottage that was situated right on the lake front. The accommodation could not have been better, wonderful location and so clean and tidy with everything you could possibly want. He was fascinated by the sky at night and marvelled at the galaxy which he hadn’t been able to appreciate before living in a built up area. Overall they both experienced a memorable time together in a beautiful setting.
I have just spoken to RF who went to stay at Mahonia Lodge recently, they had a wonderful time. The accommodation was absolutely perfect for them and they have all come back feeling better for having had a break and a change of scenery. Many, many thanks for organising such a lovely break for them, it was greatly appreciated.
“Hearing the change in a patient’s voice after they’ve received our support is incredibly rewarding. It serves as a powerful reminder of why we do what we do. As a point of access for colleagues in other local hospital Trusts and Hospices , ABOAB offer something truly unexpected: hope and relief during one of life’s most challenging journeys.
I am proud to be part of this collaborative effort, making a difference together. Through our shared commitment, we continue to provide not just care, but moments of joy and peace to those who need it most.”
As a GP working in West Yorkshire, I have had the privilege of being able to refer patients to ABOAB for the past few years.
The benefits of what ABOAB gives to patients and their families are many. Offering something so positive to families at such a difficult and unpredictable time in their lives is hugely beneficial: “It’s hard to believe that something like this could actually happen when everything seems so bleak”. ” We would never have been able to spend a holiday with our family if this hadn’t happened”.
What our supporters say…
The whole concept of ABOAB sounds so good and we would very much like to be involved.
Our house in the Lake District belonged to my husband’s grandmother and has been enjoyed by family members through the generations! We feel very fortunate to have a ‘holiday property’. It is really not something we would have been able to afford normally, but simply due to lucky family circumstances and because it is shared with other family members, we can. We all have so many good memories of our times in the house and are pleased to play any part we can in helping other families to share good times through ABOAB.
“We feel very lucky to have a holiday home and have enjoyed many great family holidays there ourselves. We’re delighted to gift a week or two each year for these families to enjoy – it makes us feel good and we know it’s really appreciated. We know from experience it’s a place where memories are made!”
